Biathlon & Cross-Country

Although similar in style, apart from the shooting aspect of biathlon, the two sports have completely separate National and International Governing Bodies. The British Biathlon Union (BBU) organises the sport at national level and the International Biathlon Union (IBU) at international level. Snowsport GB (formerly The British Ski and Snowboard Federation (BSSF) and the International Ski Federation (FIS) are the Cross-Country governing bodies. FIS is also responsible for Alpine Skiing.
Army Biathlon competitions cover a range of distances from the women's relay of 6 km to the 20 km for men. There are 2 or 4 bouts of shooting per competitor in each race. One of the most exciting events, which is held under floodlights, is the 1 km BBU Super Sprint, where  teams compete in a sudden death knock-out relay. There is also a floodlit 1 km Cross-Country knock-out sprint race. Other Cross-Country races currently in the programme are the brand new style 5km double pursuit (with a pit stop change of skis in mid race) and the 15 km. All races demand physical endurance and efficient technique.
The Great Britain Men’s and Women's World & European Cup Cup Biathlon teams are found largely from serving Army soldiers.
